Neurovirulent SIV infection results in a significant quantitative increase in TUNEL-positive cells in the macaque CNS

Data from three images per section were analyzed on three different sections from each of three macaques in each experimental group and averaged to yield the final results. The three images (each 4.3 mm2) analyzed represented more than 80% of the total area per section. Data are reported as mean number of TUNEL-positive objects per cm2 ± SEM (n = 3). Significant overall values were obtained using a one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) between groups. Significance was determined by the Student’s t test for independent means; *p < 0.002.
