Anti-MIF inhibits angiogenesis in vivo. BALB/c mice (n = 8 per group) were injected subcutaneously with 0.5 ml of Matrigel and treated with either anti-MIF or a control IgG1 as described in Materials and Methods. Structures stained by Masson’s Trichrome include the collagenous basement membrane (blue), muscle fibers (red), Matrigel (blue/red), and red blood cells within the neovasculature (red). Representative sections are shown from one animal each (100×). A negative control for angiogenesis was also performed, and consisted of mice implanted with Matrigel in which the aFGF had been omitted. No new blood vessels were evident in these specimens (data not shown).
